Isotopes

Definition

Atoms with the same number of protons but different number of neutrons are called isotopes

Isotopes share the same chemical properties, but different physical properties.

Example

Hydrogen comes in 3 forms

  1. Protium:
  2. Deuterium: You can't use 'macro parameter character #' in math mode\ce{ { #2_} {1}H }
  3. Tritium: You can't use 'macro parameter character #' in math mode\ce{ { #3_} {1}H }

The superscript represents the number of neutrons and the subscript represents the number of protons.

Stability

Definition

Stable isotopes do not emit radiation, while unstable isotopes do
