Solutions
Definition
A solution is a homogeneous (one phase) mixture. There are 2 parts:
- Solvent: dissolves the solute
- Solute: is dissolved
The separate solvent and solute become attracted to each other.
A solution can be anything, including a solid, liquid, or gas
Examples
| Gas | Liquid | Solid | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gas | Air | Soda | Hydrogen in Platinum |
| Liquid | Water in air | Alcohol in water | Fillings |
| Solid | Mothballs | Salt in water | Brass |
Example
Sodium chloride in water. Water is the solvent, sodium chloride is the solute
